The prices of onions and potatoes have started to fall in the Dhaka market. In the past two weeks, the price of onions has decreased by 20 taka per kilogram and potatoes by 10 taka. Sellers said that usually, cut onions start coming to the market in late November and potatoes in early December. However, this year, due to floods and heavy rains, farmers delayed sowing of potato and onion seeds. Due to this, the two products were being sold at high prices in the market for some time. Now, as new onions and potatoes have started arriving, the prices of these two products are decreasing.
A visit to the market revealed that three types of onions are currently being sold: old local onions, locally cut onions and imported onions. Out of these, old local onions are being sold at 90-110 taka per kg and imported onions at 80-90 taka. The price of cut onions is even lower; one kg costs 70-80 taka. In addition, onions with leaves are being sold at 50-60 taka per kg. Two weeks ago, old local onions were being sold at 110-130 taka per kg and imported onions at 100-110 taka.

On the other hand, two weeks ago, the price of one kilogram of old potatoes was 80 taka. With the increase in the supply of new potatoes, the price has come down to 10 to 20 taka. Currently, both new and old potatoes are being sold at 60-70 taka.
Meanwhile, even during the peak Aman season, the price of rice at the retail level has increased by 2-5 taka per kg. Wholesalers say that the price of rice has increased at the mill level in different parts of the country. This has affected the retail market. However, rice mill owners claim that they have increased the price of rice by increasing the price of paddy.
Edible oil companies are not supplying oil at full capacity. We have to argue and fight with dealers to get oil. Even then, what we are getting is much less than the demand.Md. Sohel, a grocery seller in Sheorapara market
Soybean supply is low
There has been a shortage of bottled soybeans in the market for several weeks. The supply of bottled soybean oil in retail stores has now increased slightly compared to before; but the situation is not yet completely normal. On December 9, the price of soybean oil was increased by eight taka per liter. It was hoped that the supply of oil would increase quickly; but that did not happen.
Md. Sohel, a grocery seller in Sheorapara Market, said, "Edible oil companies are not supplying oil in full swing. We have to argue and quarrel with dealers to get oil. Even then, what we are getting is much less than the demand."
