**"We Want Unity, Not Division": Hasnat Abdullah**
Hasnat Abdullah, the convener of the anti-discrimination student movement, has called for unity to dismantle fascism in Bangladesh. In a post shared on her verified Facebook page on Wednesday, she emphasized, "We want unity, not division. We want unity to eliminate fascism."
The student leaders who spearheaded the July-August student-people's movement have remained resolute in their demand to exclude the Awami League from political participation and elections. Meanwhile, the major opposition party, BNP, opposes banning any political party. Amid this political tension, Hasnat Abdullah underscored the need for collective efforts to end fascism.
In her post, Hasnat Abdullah described how the BNP and Jamaat parties have been severely repressed under the "Awami dictatorship" over the past decade and a half. "The Awami League’s tyranny has cost these parties countless dedicated leaders and workers," she wrote. Accusing the Awami League of wielding brutal oppression against dissent, she highlighted their suppression of democracy, voting rights, and human rights.
Hasnat also reflected on the broader impact of the Awami League's actions, pointing to victims ranging from daily wage earners to children who participated in the anti-discrimination student movement during the 24th mass uprising. "The uprising has created a historic opportunity to build a new Bangladesh by uniting all oppressed groups," she added, stressing that the fascist Awami League has no place in the country’s future.
She called for the banning of the Awami League as a political entity and for bringing its enablers to justice, stating that this demand resonates widely among the people of Bangladesh.
Hasnat further urged vigilance against the mistakes of the past, referencing the failures of 1971 and 1990. "We cannot allow another fascist regime to rise, nor can we let external forces reassert control over our sovereign nation," she wrote. She stressed the need for unity across all anti-fascist political groups, regardless of party affiliation, to ensure a stable, fascism-free Bangladesh.
“Division will not bring prosperity to the people of Bangladesh," she declared. "We need good governance to replace misrule. For too long, the people have suffered. It is time to bring peace and stability back to the nation."
Reiterating her call for solidarity, Hasnat Abdullah concluded: "The unity of all anti-fascist political parties is critical to eradicating the fascist system and ensuring justice for Awami League atrocities. Mutual cooperation, not rivalry, is the way forward. We will work together to achieve a shared goal. We want unity, not division. We want unity to eliminate fascism."
